Meet Our Sulawesi & Toraja Guides

The person you travel with can completely change the way you understand a place.
Our guides are not simply there to move you from one attraction to another. They help explain the culture, connect the places you visit with the people who live there, communicate with local communities and adapt the journey when something interesting happens along the way.
Our local Sulawesi tour guides are based across South Sulawesi and Tana Toraja, offering private guiding services for cultural tours, overland journeys, and immersive travel experiences.
We also provide Sulawesi tour francophone guides for French-speaking travelers who want a more personal and culturally accurate experience across Toraja and surrounding regions.
Specialties: Toraja Culture • Sulawesi Overland Travel • Cultural Interpretation
Languages: English • French • Indonesian • Toraja
Herman Paseru was born and raised in Tana Toraja and has more than 20 years of experience in tourism, hospitality, cultural travel and guiding international travelers.
Toraja is not a destination he learned about for tourism. It is where he grew up.
The ceremonies, family relationships, traditions and community life that travelers come to discover were part of his life long before he became a guide.
After leaving Toraja, Herman continued building his experience in Bali and later in France. Those years helped shape the way he works with international travelers today, bringing together local understanding, cross-cultural experience and a personal approach to travel.
Through Indo Voyages, Herman now creates private journeys through Toraja and across Sulawesi for travelers who want to understand the places they visit, not simply see them.
Asis

Specialties: Toraja Culture • Sulawesi Overland Travel • Cultural Interpretation
Languages: English • French • Indonesian • Toraja
Asis brings decades of guiding experience and a deep familiarity with Torajan culture, traditional villages, ceremonies and everyday community life.
His calm and personal approach gives travelers time to ask questions, understand cultural context and experience Toraja beyond a fixed sightseeing schedule.
Uttu

Specialties: Toraja Culture • Sulawesi Overland Travel • Cultural Interpretation
Languages: English • Indonesian • Toraja
Uttu is particularly suited to travelers interested in the quieter side of Toraja and South Sulawesi.
Rice fields, farming communities, mountain landscapes, traditional settlements and everyday rural life become part of the journey rather than simply scenery between destinations.

Toraja Tour Guide - Explore With People Who Call It Home
Toraja is at the heart of Indo Voyages.
It is home.
Travelers often arrive knowing about Tongkonan houses, cliff graves, buffalo or elaborate funeral ceremonies.
But these are only the visible parts of a much larger story.
A local Toraja guide can help you understand why a Tongkonan is connected to family identity, why ancestral burial places remain important, why buffalo carry deep social and ceremonial meaning and why major ceremonies can involve entire communities.
That context changes the journey.
Londa becomes more than a burial cave.
Ke’te Kesu becomes more than a row of beautiful traditional houses.
A ceremony becomes more than something unusual to photograph.
You begin to understand the relationship between family, ancestors, landscape, community and tradition that makes Toraja one of Indonesia’s most distinctive cultural regions.

Explore Tana Toraja & North Toraja With a Local Guide

Your journey through Toraja can be shaped around culture, villages, landscapes, trekking, photography or a combination of different experiences.
Ke’te Kesu
Traditional Tongkonan houses, rice barns, ancestral heritage and burial traditions come together within one cultural landscape.
Londa
A sacred burial area where caves, coffins and Tau Tau figures offer insight into Toraja’s relationship with ancestors and family history.
Lemo
Known for its cliff burial chambers and Tau Tau figures, Lemo offers another perspective on Torajan family structures, history and ancestral traditions.
Bori’ Kalimbuang
A ceremonial landscape known for its standing stones and its connection with important funeral traditions.
Palawa
A traditional settlement in North Toraja where Tongkonan architecture reflects family heritage and identity.
Batutumonga & Mount Sesean
Highland scenery, rice terraces, villages and walking routes overlooking the valleys around Rantepao.
Ollon
Open hills and rural landscapes for travelers interested in a quieter and less-visited side of Toraja.
Your itinerary does not need to be identical to everyone else’s.
Weather, road conditions, ceremonies, local events and unexpected opportunities can all influence the experience.
That flexibility is one of the advantages of traveling privately.
Private Toraja Tours Designed Around You

Some travelers have only a day or two.
Others want several days to slow down, walk through villages and understand Toraja more deeply.

Toraja Trekking & Village Experience
Walk through rice terraces, rural settlements, coffee-growing areas and mountain landscapes while experiencing everyday life beyond the main cultural sites.
Multi-Day Toraja Journey
Combine villages, cultural sites, markets, landscapes and local experiences across Tana Toraja and North Toraja at a more relaxed pace.
Toraja & South Sulawesi Journey
Continue beyond Toraja toward Makassar, Rammang-Rammang, Lake Tempe, Sengkang or Bira as part of a longer private journey.
Every itinerary can be adjusted around your dates, interests and preferred pace.
Visiting a Toraja Funeral Ceremony
Rambu Solo’ is one of the cultural traditions most closely associated with Toraja.
It is also one of the experiences that benefits most from local guidance.
A funeral ceremony is not a performance arranged for visitors. It is a family and community event with deep cultural, ancestral and social meaning.
When a suitable ceremony is taking place and visitors may respectfully attend, your guide can help explain what is happening, introduce appropriate etiquette and provide the context needed to understand the experience.
Ceremonies depend on family schedules and local circumstances.
For that reason, Indo Voyages does not promise a funeral ceremony simply because a traveler requests one for a particular date.
Respect comes first.

English-Speaking Guide in Toraja
Being able to communicate comfortably with your guide can completely change the Toraja experience.
Why are the houses arranged this way?
What does a particular symbol mean?
Why are buffalo important?
What is happening during this part of the ceremony?
How is life changing for younger generations in Toraja?
Our English-speaking Toraja guides can answer questions as they arise while also helping with the practical side of your journey.
A good guide does not simply tell you where you are.
A good guide helps you understand why the place matters.

French-Speaking Guides for Toraja & Sulawesi
Indo Voyages has a long connection with francophone travelers.
Herman began studying French in Bali and later continued his language and cultural experience in France. Over the years, he has guided French-speaking travelers through Toraja and wider Sulawesi.
For us, speaking French is not simply about translating information.
Travel becomes more natural when your guide understands how you communicate, the questions you are likely to ask and the way you prefer to experience a destination.
French-speaking private guiding can be arranged for Tana Toraja, North Toraja, South Sulawesi and longer journeys across the island.
If you are planning a Toraja tour francophone or a longer private journey through Sulawesi, you can discuss the trip directly with the Indo Voyages team.

Planning a Toraja Tour From Bali?
Many international travelers begin their journey through Indonesia in Bali.
With Indo Voyages, Bali can also become the starting point for your journey into Sulawesi.
You can meet our team at Jl. Tangkuban Perahu, Kerobokan, Bali, talk through your itinerary in person and prepare the journey before leaving for Sulawesi.
A typical journey can begin:
Bali → Ngurah Rai International Airport → Sultan Hasanuddin International Airport, Makassar → Toraja
Depending on your plans, the Indo Voyages team can help coordinate airport transfers, flight planning, pickup in Makassar, private transportation toward Toraja, accommodation, local guiding and your onward journey through Sulawesi.
Instead of organizing every part of the trip with different people, you can begin planning with one team in Bali and continue with local support once you arrive in Sulawesi.
Plan Your Toraja Journey From Bali

Explore Sulawesi Beyond Toraja
Our deepest roots are in Toraja, but our experience extends across Sulawesi.
This is a vast island where every region feels different.
Highland cultures give way to lakes.
Long roads lead toward tropical coastlines and islands.
Languages, architecture, food and traditions change as you travel.
South Sulawesi
A private journey may connect:
Makassar → Rammang-Rammang → Toraja → Sengkang → Lake Tempe → Bira
This route brings together karst landscapes, Bugis heritage, Torajan highland culture, traditional communities and the southern coastline.
Central Sulawesi
A longer journey can continue through:
Toraja → Poso → Tentena → Lake Poso → Ampana → Togean Islands
The landscapes gradually change from highlands toward lakes, waterfalls and remote tropical islands.
North Sulawesi
Journeys in North Sulawesi may include:
Manado → Tangkoko → Bunaken → Siladen → Lake Linow → Likupang
Here, Sulawesi changes again with rainforest, wildlife, volcanic landscapes and marine environments.

Private Sulawesi Overland Journeys
For travelers with more time, traveling overland reveals a side of Sulawesi that is difficult to experience when flying directly between destinations.
The road becomes part of the journey.
Landscapes change.
Languages change.
Food changes.
Architecture changes.
And the communities you meet along the way reveal how diverse one Indonesian island can be.
The Indo Voyages team can help coordinate local guides, private transportation, drivers, accommodation, regional connections, trekking, cultural experiences and flexible adjustments along the way.
We consider both what you want to experience and what makes sense on the ground.

More Than a Sightseeing Tour
Years later, most travelers will not remember every hotel or every road.
They remember moments.
Walking through rice terraces early in the morning.
A conversation with someone they would never have met traveling alone.
Sitting quietly during a ceremony and beginning to understand why it matters to the family around them.
Laughing with the guide who has spent several days traveling with them.
Watching the Toraja highlands disappear behind them and realizing the journey has changed the way they see Indonesia.
Those are the memories we care about.
We want travelers to return home with more than photographs.
We want them to return with stories they will still tell many years from now.

Culture With Context
We do not want travelers to simply see Toraja.
We want them to understand it.

Why Toraja Matters to Us
We believe Toraja deserves to be experienced as one of Indonesia’s great cultural destinations.
Not because it is strange or exotic.
But because its living traditions, Tongkonan architecture, ancestral heritage, landscapes, ceremonies, family relationships and community values tell an extraordinary story about Indonesia.
These traditions are not museum pieces.
They remain part of everyday life.
Our hope is to introduce Toraja to more travelers without losing the respect and cultural understanding that make the experience meaningful.
If someone visits with Indo Voyages and, many years later, still talks about the people they met, the stories they heard and what they learned in Toraja, that matters to us more than how many attractions they managed to see in one day.
